Welcome to Greece!
If you are planning to stay and begin a life here – whether for studies, work, or a fresh start – one of the first and most important steps is obtaining your residence permit.
To get the permit, having health insurance is a legal requirement and a crucial condition.
At Prestige Insurance, we understand the challenges and questions that third-country nationals face when moving to Greece. That’s why we created this guide to help you quickly and easily understand what you need in terms of health insurance coverage for your residence permit application.
Why is Health Insurance Mandatory for a Residence Permit?
According to Greek law, all third-country nationals residing in Greece must have access to healthcare.
This requirement is a mandatory condition for the issuance and renewal of residence permits, as outlined in the Immigration Code (Law 4251/2014).
Private health insurance applies as official proof to the Greek authorities (Immigration Services) that, in case of emergency, you will have the necessary medical care without burdening yourself or the public health system.
Minimum Health Insurance Requirements for Residence Permit
The type and minimum required coverages are specified in Joint Ministerial Decision (JMD) 53821/2014 (Government Gazette B'2916/2014).
This regulation defines the specific risks and benefits that must be included in the insurance policy, such as:
- Permanent, total or partial disability from accident: minimum coverage of €15,000 per year.
- Medical expenses due to illness or accident: minimum coverage of €1,500 per year.
- Inpatient hospital care: minimum coverage of €10,000 per year.
In all of the above, the insured person's participation must not exceed 20%.
Policies must not include any extra deductibles or special additional agreements, and must cover a period of one year.
What does a standard Health Insurance for Residence Permit Cover?
Health insurance policies for residence permits are specifically designed to meet legal requirements, while offering solutions.
Such insurance usually includes:
- Hospitalization in Public Greek Hospitals: Coverage up to €10,000 in public hospitals, up to 80% coverage of eligible hospitalization costs due to accident or illness.
- Medical expenses due to accident and illness: Coverage up to €1,500 up to 80% coverage.
- Accidental death: Coverage of €15,000 up to 80% coverage.
- Permanent, total or partial disability from accident: Coverage of €15,000 up to 80% coverage.
- One Day Surgeries: Eligible expenses covered.
- Emergency and urgent incidents: Recognized expenses at public hospital outpatient units.
For all of the above, the insured person's participation is set at 20%.
Note: These insurance plans provide coverage exclusively at public hospitals in Greece and focus on unexpected and emergency healthcare needs.
